Ffos Las is a young native woodland predominantly planted between 2012 2014. This site has been transformed from being one of Europe’s largest opencast coal mines to a tranquil de ciduous woodland bustling with wildlife. The native woodland mix comprises alder, birch, rowan and there is also a variety of woody shrubs including blackthorn, hawthorn and hazel. The property rises to 70m above sea level and faces due west giving panoramic views over Ffos Las Racecourse, Carmarthen Bay and the surrounding countryside. A small river, the Afon Morlais forms part of the northern boundary.
The woodland was planted by the Woodland Trust under the Better Woodlands for Wales scheme. Areas of open ground, scrub and grasses comple ment the native woodland to provide an area rich in N atural C apital as well as providing opportunities for woodland recreation, crafts and quiet enjoyment.
A series of tracks allows good access throughout the property. As well as the main entrance shown at Point A1 on the Sale Plan , a secondar y access south of the housing development is at A 3 A 4 . This is suitable for 4×4 vehicles only. A pedestrian entrance along the public footpath is located at Point A5.
