Glen Shira Forest is an extensive commercial Sitka spruce plantation that was established in the 1970s. The property has undergone systematic felling and restocking, which began in 2010. This has led to a desirable, mixed age class structure. Modelling shows the lower slopes have the potential to produce Yield Classes of 28+. This is evidenced by some first rotation stands producing timber yields in excess of 700t/ha. The bulk of the remaining mature timber planted 1971 – 1976, has a Yield Class range estimated 10 – 24.
The young restocked crops are generally on the lower slopes of the property and have established well. Attention has been paid to filling-in unplanted areas. Restocked crops are of a good quality, with further restocking currently ongoing.
The majority of Glen Shira Forest is on sloping ground, comprising the easterly shoulder of the Glen. Brannie Burn, Kilblaan Burn and other minor burns run down to the River Shira. The property rises from 30m – 580m above sea level.
